What To Do If You Missed or
Failed an Elevator Inspection
01
Understand what happened — and what to do next.
Every elevator and escalator in Georgia must undergo a Category 1 Annual Safety Test to verify that it operates safely in accordance with ASME A17.1 and Georgia Rule 120-3-25. This isn’t just state red tape — it’s how the state ensures that the equipment carrying your tenants, guests, and employees meets the same safety standards used nationwide.
If you’ve missed or failed an elevator Inspection, don’t panic. These issues are common, and the solution is straightforward once you know what’s required.
02
Know What the Annual Elevator Test Actually Checks
The Category 1 Annual Safety Test examines key safety systems that protect passengers every day — brakes, door locks, overspeed governors, buffers, emergency stop switches, and backup power. These checks confirm that if anything goes wrong, the elevator’s built-in safety devices will perform their intended function. Think of it like your car’s brake inspection — not just about movement, but about stopping safely when it counts.
03
Understand Georgia’s Requirements
Under Georgia Rule 120-3-25, every elevator, escalator, dumbwaiter, and vertical platform lift must have its annual test witnessed by a Qualified Elevator Inspector (QEI) who is independent from the maintenance company. After the test, that inspector files the results with the Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner (the state’s elevator authority). If results aren’t submitted or the test fails, the elevator can’t legally stay in service until it passes and is documented.
04
Why CAT 1 Tests Get Missed or Fail
Missed tests usually happen when ownership changes, reminders lapse, or maintenance providers rotate out. Failed tests often come from mechanical adjustments, worn parts, or missing documentation — not always from major safety hazards. The key is knowing which type of failure it is: operational (something needs repair) or administrative (paperwork or submission error).
05
How Vital Elevator Inspections Helps
We provide independent test witnessing and compliance review for all Category 1 and Category 5 tests. Our QEI-certified inspectors verify that each required function is tested, documented, and ready for state submission. We explain in plain terms what failed, why it failed, and how to correct it — so you can work efficiently with your maintenance company to fix the issue and avoid repeat problems.
06
The Documentation You’ll Receive
After the test, you’ll receive a comprehensive report that lists the test date, code sections referenced, and any items that need attention before retesting. We also ensure your results are uploaded properly to the state’s online inspection system, which helps you avoid delays or rejected filings that can keep your certificate on hold.
07
The 5-Year Full-Load Test
In addition to the CAT-1 annual test, Georgia requires a Category 5 test every five years, which includes a full-load brake test and other high-stress safety checks. We coordinate these evaluations to ensure they’re completed on time and submitted correctly, keeping your equipment safe and your compliance record clean.
