What To Do If Your Elevator
Has Code Violations
Includes escalators, moving walkways, and wheelchair lifts.
01
Don’t panic — violations are fixable.
Getting a state notice or red-tag on your elevator doesn’t automatically mean you’re in trouble. It just means something needs attention — and that’s where we come in. Vital Elevator Inspections helps property managers and owners understand code violations, resolve them promptly, and prevent future issues.
02
Review and Understand the Violation Report
Carefully review the inspection report provided by your inspector. The report should detail the specific code sections that have been violated and categorize the severity of each issue. While some violations may be minor, others can be serious enough to warrant an immediate shutdown (sometimes called a “red tag”).
Not all inspections are created equal. At Vital Elevator Inspections, our QEI-certified inspectors evaluate your equipment according to Georgia Rule 120-3-25 and ASME A17.1 safety codes, the same standards used by the state.
We explain how each violation relates to code. We also discuss what may have caused it and how your maintenance provider could correct it properly. This transparency helps you get your equipment issues addressed and violations resolved. Your equipment stays compliant, safe, and in good standing with state regulators.
As an independent company, we do not perform repairs or maintenance, which removes any conflict of interest. Our only goal is to ensure your elevators, escalators, lifts, and dumbwaiters meet code and operate safely.
03
Stop Using Unsafe Equipment
If your inspector has tagged your elevator as unsafe or issued an order to discontinue its use, you must immediately take it out of service. Operating an elevator that has been deemed unsafe can lead to serious injury and legal liability. In Georgia, the State of Georgia Elevator Safety Division has the discretion to require the owner to cease operation of an unsafe elevator.
Taking unsafe equipment out of service protects you, the property owner. So it is important that any unsafe equipment remains out of service until all repairs are made and the equipment is reinspected for correction.
04
Contact Your Elevator Maintenance Contractor
Your elevator maintenance company is responsible for fixing any issues outlined in an inspection report. It is important that you contact them immediately with the report.
When we identify an elevator code violation, we make clarity the priority. Our inspectors reference the specific ASME A17.1 and Georgia Rule 120-3-25 code sections tied to each issue, making it easier for your maintenance company to complete the correct repairs.
With our report, your maintenance contractor can provide you with an action plan to get all violations resolved quickly. Vital Elevator Inspections works with you and your maintenance contractor to establish a corrective action plan and have your equipment reinspected as soon as possible.
05
Document the Repairs
- Invoices from the elevator company.
- Work order descriptions listing the specific repairs.
- Photographic evidence of the completed work, where possible.
This level of detail provides the inspector with the proof they need to confirm your compliance.
06
Arrange for a Re-inspection
After all elevator repairs are completed, a follow-up inspection is required to confirm that every violation has been properly corrected. In Georgia, this process is regulated by the Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner and must be carried out by a state-certified elevator inspector.
At Vital Elevator Inspections, we make the reinspection process seamless and reliable. As a certified third-party inspection firm, we can promptly verify your equipment corrections and provide clear, detailed documentation of compliance. Our reports include notes, photos, and specific code references from ASME A17.1 and Georgia Rule 120-3-25, ensuring your records are thorough and inspection-ready. With Vital, you gain organized documentation, faster approvals, and the confidence that your elevators meet every safety and code requirement.
07
Prevention First – Avoid Future Violations
The most effective way to handle code violations is to prevent them before they happen. Most citations come from missed deadlines, incomplete safety tests, or overlooked maintenance records. You can avoid these issues with consistent oversight.
Regular independent inspections give you a clear, unbiased view of your elevator’s condition between state-required visits. They help you catch small problems early and prevent costly shutdowns or fines.
At Vital Elevator Inspections, we help you create a custom inspection schedule that meets Georgia’s annual and five-year test requirements. Our team tracks renewal dates, sends reminders, and helps you keep your certificates current. Additionally, your elevator(s) will remain compliant year-round, eliminating the stress of last-minute deadlines and repairs.
Preventive inspections go beyond paperwork. They protect your tenants, reduce downtime, and keep your building ahead of state requirements.
08
Reminder Program
Avoid future violations by staying one step ahead of state deadlines. Our automatic reminder program tracks your inspection cycle and sends alerts before your next inspection or test is due — so you’ll never be caught off guard by an expired certificate or missed submission again.
With Vital Elevator Inspections, compliance becomes simple, predictable, and stress-free. You’ll know what’s due, when it’s due, and have a partner ready to keep your building operating safely and legally year-round.
Stay ahead of deadlines, avoid violations, and keep your building running smoothly.
