Frequently Asked Questions

Our FAQ covers the most common questions we hear. Still need help? Contact us and our team will be happy to assist you.
How often do elevators need to be inspected in Georgia?
In Georgia, all elevators must be inspected once a year to remain in compliance. In addition to this annual inspection, elevators are required to undergo a Category 1 safety test, which a state-certified third-party inspector must witness. Every five years, traction elevators must also complete a more in-depth Category 5 full-load safety test, performed in place of the annual test. While your elevator maintenance company conducts these tests, state law requires a certified third-party inspector—like Vital Elevator Inspections—to witness them to ensure accuracy and compliance.
👉 Call us today to schedule your annual or five-year inspection and stay compliant.
What happens if my elevator certificate has expired?
If your elevator certificate has expired, your building is officially out of compliance and may face state fines or penalties. We offer prompt scheduling to complete the required inspection so you can renew your certificate quickly, avoid costly penalties, and keep your elevator running safely.
👉 Don’t risk fines — contact us now to renew your certificate.
Can you help if my building has code violations?
Yes, we can help with building code violations related to elevators, escalators, wheelchair/handicapped lifts, and other vertical transportation systems. Our certified inspectors identify violations, including ADA compliance issues, provide clear reports, and guide you through the steps needed to correct them. Once corrections are made, we perform a re-inspection to confirm compliance and ensure your building is safe, accessible, and fully up to code.
👉 Call today and let us help you resolve your violations with confidence.
Do you inspect more than just elevators?
Yes — we inspect much more than elevators. Our services also cover escalators, moving walks, wheelchair/handicapped lifts, dumbwaiters, and material lifts. In addition, we provide certified CAT-1 and CAT-5 test witnessing, along with consulting support for new installations, existing equipment, and modernization projects.
👉 Schedule your inspection today for any of your building’s vertical transportation systems.
How do I schedule an inspection?
Scheduling is simple — you can call us directly or request an inspection online through our website form. Building managers, administrators, and O&M firms often handle this for building owners, and we’ll work with you to find a convenient time.
👉 Reach out today to book your inspection at a time that works best for you.
Will you remind us when our next inspection is due?
Yes. We track your inspection dates and send reminders before your certificate expires. That way, you’ll always stay ahead of compliance deadlines and avoid last-minute issues.
👉 Get peace of mind — call today and we’ll keep your inspections on schedule.
Do you provide official reports and certificates after the inspection?
Yes. After every inspection, we issue a detailed report and file the results with the state as required. You’ll also receive a copy for your records to show your building is safe and compliant.
👉 Contact us now to schedule your inspection and get the official report you need.

If you’re not sure whether we cover your area, give us a call at 404-436-2219, and we’ll be happy to help.
Are your inspectors state-certified?
Yes. Vital Elevator Inspections is a NAESA QEI-Certified (Cert #7595) independent inspection firm. Our inspectors are licensed by the State of Georgia and fully qualified to perform annual inspections, CAT-1 and CAT-5 safety test witnessing, and consulting for all types of vertical transportation equipment. We are a neutral third party — we do not perform repairs or sell parts, so our only priority is an accurate, unbiased inspection.
What is the difference between a CAT-1 and CAT-5 test?
A CAT-1 (Category 1) test is an annual safety test required for all elevators in Georgia. It tests the elevator’s safety devices and operational functions under normal conditions. A CAT-5 (Category 5) test is a more comprehensive full-load safety test required every five years for traction elevators. It tests the elevator under full load to verify all safety devices and buffers function correctly. Both tests must be performed by your maintenance company and witnessed by a state-certified third-party inspector like Vital Elevator Inspections.
How long does an elevator inspection take?
Most standard annual elevator inspections take between 30 minutes and 1 hour per elevator, depending on the equipment type and condition. CAT-5 full-load tests may take longer. We work efficiently to minimize disruption to your building and tenants.
