Periodic inspections, also known as safety tests, are comprehensive inspections required by law and performed by a certified inspector. Periodic inspections occur annually or semi-annually.  In Georgia, periodic escalator inspections must occur at least annually and cover all safety and mechanical components in accordance with ASME A17.1, the Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators.

  • Semi-annual inspections, required by the ASME A17.1 safety code, focus on safety devices, including handrails and comb plates.
  • Annual inspections are more thorough examinations that involve checking additional safety devices, structural components, and machine parts. Often, steps and comb plates must be removed to inspect the internal truss and running gear.

Commonly inspected components include:

  • Steps and treadway: We check for damaged, worn, or misaligned steps. We also measure the distance between steps to ensure safety.
  • Comb plates: The teeth at the entry and exit points are checked for damage or missing parts, as these can snag on clothing or shoelaces and cause injuries.
  • Handrails: We verify that handrails are stable, operational, and move at the correct speed relative to the steps. Poorly functioning or broken handrails are grounds for an inspection.
  • Emergency stop buttons: The functionality of all emergency stop buttons at both the top and bottom of the escalator is tested.
  • Lighting: Proper lighting at the entrance, exit, and along the entire length of the escalator is confirmed.
  • Skirt panels and obstruction devices: The space between the moving steps and the stationary side panels (skirt panels) is checked. Obstruction devices designed to stop the escalator if an object becomes trapped are also tested.
  • Guards and balustrades: The balustrades and any deck barricade or anti-slide guards are inspected for integrity and damage.
  • Signage: Caution signs, emergency instructions, and the data plate are checked to ensure they are visible and not damaged or missing.
  • Operating devices and speed: The escalator’s operating devices and overall speed are checked to ensure they are functioning within safe parameters.
  • Machinery and wiring: The mechanical and electrical systems, including the controller and wiring, are examined to ensure they are in good working order.
  • Fire protection: General fire protection measures related to the escalator’s operation are reviewed, and we verify that a Class “ABC” fire extinguisher is nearby
  • Braking system: Safety braking systems are tested to ensure they can properly stop the escalator under emergency conditions.
  • Record-keeping: We review maintenance and repair records to confirm proper and timely servicing.

If an inspection reveals an unsafe condition, the escalator may be discontinued until the issue is corrected. All violations must be corrected and filed with the state within a designated timeframe.
